7 Best Useful Tips For Beginners To Use Tungsten Carbide Rotary Burrs

Published On: October 22, 2020

Tungsten carbide rotary burr is one of the small carbide tools used in different industries such as machinery, automobiles, ships, chemicals, craft carving, etc. You can use it for different applications but usually used for de-burring, just like its name.

If you are a beginner to use tungsten carbide rotary burrs, you may have the following 3 questions:

1. How to choose the right shape and size of carbide rotary burrs?

2. How to fit carbide rotary burrs?

3. When using carbide rotary burrs, what should I pay attention to?

Here KoneTool prepared the 7 best useful tips for beginners, which can make your tungsten carbide rotary burr has incredible efficiency and life.

1. Shape—-choose the right shape for your specific project.

If you are a DIY lover, you probably will buy a tungsten carbide rotary burr set to fit different applications. A burr set usually has 5, 8, or 10 different shapes of burrs. But in a specific work, do you know how to choose? Here is our guide:

2. Size—choose a bigger head

A bigger carbide head has higher efficiency. So, choosing a reasonable big head can speed up work and save your time.

3. Fitting—choose the right chuck

At first, please use the correct chuck for corresponding burrs, and check the concentricity of machine to avoid tremors and shock. Otherwise, it will cause premature wear.

Secondly, for safety, the grabbing position should be at least 2/3 of the shank. Please avoid grabbing too short.

4. Direction—avoid reciprocating movement

During de-burring, please move burr head in one direction(like left to right, or right to left). If you move it back and forth, it may cause premature wear and a crack of the cutting edge.

5. Grease—use grease for highly viscous materials

When processing highly viscous materials, you’d better use lubricating oil or grease, to avoid carbide burr doesn’t work, due to blockage of chip removal groove.

6. Pressure—use a suitable pressure

Using a suitable pressure during working. Much high pressure will cause the temperature is too high to dissipate. It may even cause the welding part to fall off.

7. Speed—Choose maximum RPM within allowable range.

No matter what tools you use, RPM always cares. For tungsten carbide rotary burrs,  reasonable operating speed is very important to achieve required degree of cutting and workpiece quality.

Try to choose highest speed within allowable range. minimum RPM should be above 3000. Because low speed will reduce chip removal performance and produce trembling, which results in reduced tool life and poor surface finish.

Each type of rotary carbide burr must select an appropriate operating speed according to the specific application. Knowing 2 following methods, you can try to adjust speed to a suitable number.

l Increasing speed can improve processing quality and lengthen tool life, but it may cause shank to break;

l Reducing speed will help to quickly remove material but may cause the system to overheat and cutting quality to fluctuate.

The above graph gives the suggested RPM of carbide rotary burrs. the top line is for stainless steel and other is for other common materials such as aluminium, ceramics, fibreglass, plastic, wood, etc.

After reading this article, I hope you have a basic understanding of carbide rotary burr and can solve 3 problems at beginning.
