Carbide Insert Knives: Sizes, Material, and Applications

Published On: April 7, 2023

Carbide insert knives can be seen almost everywhere in the cutting process of woodworking. They play an essential role in woodworking projects for directly contacting the surface of the workpiece. With premium carbide insert knives, the surface can be accurate, smooth, and clean. In this article, we will explore the material, commonly used sizes, and applications of turnover knives.

Material of carbide insert knives: TUNGSTEN CARBIDE

Tungsten carbide is the second hardest material in the world. Sometimes, tungsten carbide is mentioned to refer to cemented carbide. However, in addition to tungsten carbide, cemented carbide can also refer to composites made from titanium carbide (TiC), or tantalum carbide (TaC). Tungsten carbide is a type of chemical composite, comprising tungsten carbide (WC) powder and a binder, usually cobalt. Through sintering, it can be pressed and formed into shapes for a wide range of applications, including cutting tools, mining and construction, medical, nuclear, and jewelry, just to name a few.

Tungsten carbide is equipped with some characteristics allowing for excellent performance in those industries. As mentioned earlier, it is extremely hard, so it can deal with hard and abrasive materials. Besides, the outstanding abrasion and high-temperature resistance of tungsten carbide allow faster machining compared to steel. Tools made from carbide usually feature a very sharp cutting edge, producing a smoother and cleaner finish on the workpiece.

Carbide insert knives are made from tungsten carbide, allowing for more possibilities in various applications.

Applications of carbide insert knives

Carbide insert knives are extremely versatile that can be used for various purposes, such as jointing, profiling, woodturning, routing, and scraping.

Cutterheads

Turnover knives can be mounted on cutterheads for various machines, such as jointers, planers, molders, edge banding machines, etc. These inserts are made from solid tungsten carbide with great wear and high-temperature resistance, excellent cutting performance, and extended service life. In addition, when one cutting edge is dull or damaged, you can turn it into a new edge. Carbide insert knives have many sizes and shapes, especially for molders. Strictly speaking, cutters mounted on a moulding cutterhead are usually called moulding knives. Unlike moulding knives, inserts used in cutterheads of jointers and planers are mostly square or rectangular. 15mm*15mm*2.5mm is one of the most commonly used sizes.

Woodturning inserts

Woodturning inserts are also made from solid carbide. There are basically three shapes of woodturning inserts: square, round, and diamond.

CNC insert router bits

Unlike conventional router bits whose carbide cutters are brazed into the heads, CNC insert router bits are equipped with carbide insert knives. When the inserts are dull, we can change new inserts instead of throwing away the bit. Similar to moulding knives, these inserts have many shapes and sizes for different profiling purposes.

Carbide scrapers

Just like woodturning tools, carbide scrapers are also hand tools. They are mainly used for removing paint, rust, glue, varnish, and more. Generally, there are four shapes of carbide scraper cutters: square, rectangular, triangle, teardrop, and pear.
