Classification of Single-Point Cutting Tools – Turning Tools

Published On: November 14, 2020

Lathe turning tools can be the most widely used single-point cutting tools, and also, it is a cornerstone of learning and analyzing different cutting tools. Lathe cutting tools mounted on various lathes for processing outer circle, inner hole, end face, thread, groove, etc. No matter for wood cutting or metal cutting, its application is almost the same. There is more than one kind of lathe tool after its development in so many years, and it can be divided into several different kinds of turning tips according to structure, they are integral lathe tool, welding lathe tool, machine clamping turning tool, indexable turning tool, and molding turning tool. As technology advanced, some have been out of time and withdrawn from the market, and some are still being used in factories. The most outstanding one should be indexable lathe tools, which are gradually taking over the market.

1. Tungsten Carbide Welding Turning Tool

The welding turning tool is produced by a series of processing, but it’s very easy to understand. First, making a groove on carbide steel cutter at a certain geometrical Angle and welding tungsten carbide blade into the groove with solder, and grinding according to specific geometrical parameters.

2. Machine Clamping Turning Tool

Machine clamping lathe tool uses an ordinary blade and its mounting method is mechanical clamping, which can hold blades on a tool rod. Its features can be summarized as followings:
a.Without high-temperature welding, it can efficiently avoid a decrease in hardness and blade cracking. Besides, it improved the durability of cutting blades.
b.As durability improved, its service life has become longer, and indexing time has been shortening. And these two points are helpful in producing a high efficiency.
c.Handle can be reused, which saves both use ratio of blade and material. Blades can be recycled and remanufactured by manufacturers, which improves their economic benefit and reduces their cost.
d.After grinding, the blade will become smaller and smaller. To decrease this influence and restore the position of the blade on the machine, there is an adjustment structure on the blade, which is designed to make the blade can be ground more times.
e.The end of the pressing plate which is used to press the blade can also act as a chip breaker.

3. Indexable turning tips

Indexable lathe tools are a kind of tool which use indexable tips. The biggest feature of the tip is its four sides available tips. When one cutting edge gets blunt, it can be turned to another side and continue its work. And different from other kinds of lathe tools. Indexable turning tips will just consume turning tips rather than rods or handles. When the blade is scrapped, what you should do is buy a new tip and load it on the handle.

4. Forming turning tools

Forming turning tool is a special cutting tool used for machining the surface of rotary projects. The shape of its cutting edge is designed according to the profile of the workpiece, and it can be used for shaping the forming surfaces of all kinds of internal and external rotary bodies. By using this kind of turning tip, the component surface can be formed for just one time. This tool can be easily operated and features high efficiency. What’s more, after processing, the roughness of the workpiece is 10 ~ 5 m, and the tolerance level is IT8 ~ IT10. However, with its complex structure, high cost, and wide blade working length which is easy to cause vibration, it is mainly used in producing large batches of middle or small size components with forming surfaces.
